Moe Kyo, a student leader in the 1988 mass democracy uprising was arrested in 1991 and spent 12 years in Insein, Tharawaddy and Pathein prisons for his political activities. He now works on the Thai-Burma border where he is Chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs.<br />
Khun Htun Oo, an elected member of parliament for the SNLD in the 1990 general election and most senior political representative of the Shan ethnic group, was arrested in 2005 along with 3 colleagues whilst trying to promote a 'multi-party democracy'. He was charged with high treason, defamation and inciting dissatisfaction toward the government and was sentenced to 93 years imprisonment. He is currently detained in Putao prison.
