Kyaw Win Swe, former political prisoner from Burma

Kyaw Win Swe, a former member of the Basic Education Students Union, was arrested in June 1998 for his participation in the 10th anniversary of the 1988 uprising. He was sentenced to 7 years and was jailed in Mandalay prison for over 6 years. He currently lives in Nupo refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border where he is awaiting resettlement to a third country.
Nyein Maung, an organising committee member of the NLD in Mandalay, was arrested in July 2006 for allegedly having an argument with the husband of a female judge. He was initially sentenced to 1 year in prison and told that if he resigned from the NLD the charges against him would be dropped. He refused to resign and was sentenced to a total of 7 years. In October 2011 he was released from Hkamti prison under the general amnesty.
