Zaya, former joint secretary of the DPNS and member of the 88 Generation Students, was first arrested in 1991 during the 10D student movement celebrating Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nobel Peace Prize award. He was jailed for 15 years. In August 2007 he was arrested again for his role in leading peaceful protests and was sentenced to 65 years in Dawei prison. He was released from prison under a presidential amnesty in January 2012
