As the home of Burma's democracy movement in exile, Mae Sot has become the first port of call for those who flee Burma. Just 5 kms from the border with Burma, for more than 2 decades the small border town has seen hundreds of political refugees flee in search of safety and the hope of a new life. With political refugees not being officially accepted as refugees under the Thai authorities policy, life is precarious for the political refugees who live in Mae Sot. Often forced to live in secret in safe houses, more than 100 former political prisoners live in the town known as 'Little Burma' with most still continuing their political activities in Burma's democracy movement that saw them arrested and jailed in the first place.
