  • Khun Myint Tun, a National League for Democracy (NLD) member of parliament, was arrested in May 1996. He was charged with disturbing the state peace and stability and sentenced to 7 years. Along with fellow MP Kyaw Khin he was later sentenced to a further 3 years for giving videotapes of Aung San Suu Kyi's speeches to an Australian journalist. He was released in 2003 and fled Burma in 2007. He continues his political work in exile as Joint Secretary of The Members of Parliament Union (MPU) and as a Central Committee Member of the NLD-LA.<br /> Kyaw Khin is an NLD MP and colleague of Khun Myint Tun. He was arrested in February 2005 after political pamphlets were reportedly found near him in a classroom and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He was released from Taunglaylone prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.

  • U Zawana was arrested in 1993 after meeting with UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Yozo Yokota and informing him of the dire human rights situation in Burma. He was sentenced to 29 years in jail. Upon his release in 2009 the authorities forbade him to return to monkhood so was forced to flee Burma in November 2009 and currently lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Pyinnyar Wuntha is a colleague of U Zawana and a fellow monk currently detained in Insein prison.

  • Thandar Oo, was arrested and jailed for her involvement in the student demonstrations in Rangoon in December 1996. Sentenced to 7 years she spent over 6 years incarcerated in the notorious Insein prison. She continued her activism after her release and was forced to flee Burma with her husband in 2007 when threatened with re-arrest. She currently lives in exile with her husband who is also a former political prisoner, on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Nilar Thein participated in the mass uprisings on 1988 when she was just a high school student and was first jailed in 1991. She was jailed again in 1996 for leading student demonstrations and served 9 years. Together with her husband Kyaw Min Yu, she is a leader of the 88 Generation Students and in August 2007 lead peaceful demonstrations against the military regime. She went into hiding and evaded arrest for more than 1 year before finally being caught in September 2008. She was sentenced to 65 years and is currently detained in Thayet prison.

  • Aye Min Soe was involved in the student demonstrations of 1988. He was arrested in 1989 and spent 4 years in Insein and Taungoo prisons. He continued his political activities, eventually becoming a video journalist for the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) and worked undercover during the Saffron Revolution in 2007. The authorities raided his offices in October 2007 and he had to flee Burma with his family. He currently lives on the Thai-Burma border and continues to work for DVB.<br /> Ngwe Soe Lin, a fellow DVB journalist, was arrested after leaving an internet café in Rangoon. He was sentenced to 13 years in jail for working illegally with outlawed foreign media. He is currently detained in Lashio prison.

  • Ei Shwe Sin Nyunt was arrested in December 1996 for her role in student demonstrations. She spent almost 6 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. She fled Burma with her husband Yin Htway (also a former political prisoner of more than 10 years) and she now She now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border with her husband who is also a former political prisoner.<br /> Lay Lay Mon, a journalist and member of the 88 Generation Students, was first arrested and imprisoned for her involvement during the 1996 student protests. She joined the monk-led protests through the streets of Rangoon in September 2007 before being arrested on 22nd September and sentenced to 11 years. She was released from Shwebo prison under amnesty in October 2011.

  • Aung Kyaw Oo was arrested in December 1991 during student protests known as 10D that celebrated the award of the Nobel Peace prize to Aung San Suu Kyi. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but this was further extended by 7 years when along with 23 other political prisoners in Insein prison, he secretly submitted a report on conditions to the UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur. He was eventually released in 2005. He joined the 88 Generation Students before having to flee to the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Ko Ko Gyi is one of the most prominent pro-democracy activists along with Min Ko Naing and a leader of the 88 Generation Students. In the 1988 uprisings he helped reform the ABFSU and was elected vice-chairman. He was first arrested in December 1991 during the student lead 10D movement and was sentenced to 10 years in prison but his sentence was extended each year after it expired and he was finally released in 2005. He helped form the 88 Generation Students on his release and in 2007 was arrested for leading protests in Rangoon. He is currently serving a 65-year sentence in Mong Hsat prison.

  • Thet Naing, a teacher and labour rights activist, was first arrested in 1990 for his involvement in the 1988 uprising. He was sentenced to 4 years with hard labour and spent 3 years in Insein prison. In 1997 he was arrested again for a demonstration demanding rights for workers. He was jailed for 7 years before his release in 2004. He fled Burma in 2005 when military intelligence attempted to arrest him again. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Thura Aung, a student member of the ABSDF, was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to 28 years in prison for illegally crossing the border and having contact with the ABSDF in exile. He is detained in Nyaung-U prison.

  • U Mya Sein, former secretary of the Internal Peace Council lead by Thakin Kodaw Hmaing, was first arrested in 1965 for his role in brokering peace treaties with ethnic armed groups. He was sent to the notorious Coco Island prison where he served 3 years before it was closed down and he was transferred to Insein prison. He was arrested again in 1982 and 1987 serving one year in prison each time. In 1989 he helped form the People's Progressive Party after the mass uprising but was arrested and jailed until 1994. He spent more than 16 years in prison. He now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Aung Naing, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was arrested in August 2007 for his role in leading peaceful protests during that lead to the Saffron Revolution. He is currently serving a 65 year and 6 month sentence in Kale prison.

  • Kyi Phay Kyaw, a former student activist was arrested during the mass democracy uprising in 1988. He was sentenced to 21 years and served over 13 years in Insein and Myitkyina prisons. He fled the country and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Pyae Phyo Hlaing, a student activist, was arrested in September 2007 for his role in the Saffron Revolution. He was accused of illegal border crossing, attending training given by subversive organisations, defaming the state, and violations of the printing act. He is serving a 24 year sentence in Sittwe prison.

  • Myint Soe, former student leader and member of the NLD was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His sentence was extended by 7 years when he was involved with colleagues in Insein prison in providing reports about prison conditions to the UN. He was eventually released in 2008 and fled to the Thai-Burma border. He has since been resettled to the USA and is currently an Executive committee member of the NLD-LA<br /> Than Myint Swe, a member of the Karen National Union, was arrested in 1984, charged with high treason and sentenced to 25 years. He was released from Thayet prison in July 2010.

  • Daw San San, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, was arrested in 1992 at a secret meeting of MPs forming a parallel government. She was charged with high treason and sentenced to 25 years in prison. She was released under amnesty in 1993 but in in 1997 she was arrested again when she gave an interview to the BBC. She was charged under the Official Secrets Act and sentenced to 25 years. She was released in 2001. She fled to the Thai-Burma border in 2003 and is now vice president of the Members of Parliament Union.<br /> U Aung Thein, a member of the NLD Central Committee was arrested in March 2006 and charged with possession of a satellite phone and contacting exiled NLD leaders outside of the country including Daw San San. He was sentenced to 20 years and is currently detained in Insein prison.

  • Thar Gyi, a prominent student leader during the 1988 uprising was first arrested in 1990 and sentenced to 3 years. He was arrested again in December 1996 when he led student protests and was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. He served almost 13 years in 4 different prisons before fleeing to the Thai-Burma border where he now works at the AAPP.<br /> Myat San, former member of the Tri Color student group that provided security to Aung San Suu Kyi was first arrested in 1991 for his role in the 10D student protests and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In 2000 he was released from prison only to be told at the gates that he was to be detained again. He was finally released in December 2005. In November 2007 he was arrested once more for his alleged involvement in the Saffron Revolution and was jailed for 3 years until his release in 2010.

  • Thiha Yarzar, a former student leader in the 1988 uprising, member of the ABFSU and ABSDF, was arrested in 1991 when he was caught delivering letters and information from exiled organisations on the Thai-Burma border to the pro-democracy movement in Rangoon. He was charged with high treason and sentenced to death. He spent 17 and half years in 5 different prisons before being released in September 2008. He fled Burma soon after and now lives in exile in Thailand.<br /> Pannate Tun, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was first arrested in 1998 and sentenced 10 14 years in prison. Upon his release in 2005 he joined the 88 Generation Students and in 2007 lead peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon. He was arrested along with his colleagues in August 2007 and sentenced to 65 years. He is currently detained in Bhamo prison.

  • Cho Mar Htwe, former member of the NLD, was arrested in September 1998 for distributing a letter demanding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison and spent 11 years in Insein and Moulmein prison before her release in September 2009. She fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Chit Min Lay, a student leader and member of the ABFSU, was arrested in 1998 for his role leading the student movement that demanded the elected civilian government take power. He was sentenced to 31 years in prison and is currently detained in Moulmein prison.

  • Bo Kyi, a student leader in the 1988 uprisings, was one of the founding members of the ABFSU with his close friend Min Ko Naing. He was arrested on two separate occasions spending more than 7 years in prison. He was forced to flee Burma in 1999 and founded the 'Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma)' based on the Thai-Burma border of which he is joint-secretary.<br /> Min Ko Naing, founder and Chairman of the ABFSU and leader of the 88 Generation Students, is one of Burma's most prominent opponents of the military regime. He led the student uprising in 1988 but was arrested a year later and jailed for 16 years. Released in 2005, along with his colleagues he formed the 88 Generation Students group. In August 2007 he lead peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon that would lead to the Saffron Revolution, but was arrested and sentenced to 65 years and 6 months in prison. He is currently detained in solitary confinement in Kengtung prison.

  • U Sandawabartha, a member of the Young Monks Union during the 1988 uprising was arrested in 1993 when he was involved in a statement being issued demanding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. He was charged with high treason and sentenced to 29 years. He was jailed for more than 16 years before his release in 2009. He fled Burma soon after his release and now lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Thumana, a Buddhist monk, was arrested after the 1988 democracy uprising and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment. He is still detained in Insein prison.

  • Soe Lwin was arrested in 1994 aged just 14 years old when he was caught handing out anti-regime pamphlets in Rangoon along with 8 colleagues - one of whom was only 13 years old and died during interrogation. He was sentenced to 24 years and spent 15 and a half years in prison before being released under amnesty in September 2009. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Zaw Lwin, a teacher and cellmate of Soe Lwin in Moulmein prison, was arrested in January 2000 and sentenced to 21 years in prison. He is still detained in Moulmein prison.

  • Aung Myo Thein, former student leader during the 1988 democracy uprisings, was arrested in 1989 and sentenced to 8 years. He spent more than 6 years in Insein prison. He continued his political activities eventually forced to live in hiding for 3 years before fleeing Burma after his involvement in the Saffron Revolution. He now works at the AAPP in the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Nine Nine, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election was first arrested in 1990 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Released from Thayet prison in 1999 he returned to his role in the NLD but was arrested again in September 2000 for an NLD statement regarding the regime preventing Aung San Suu Kyi from travelling in Dala. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison and was finally released in September 2009.

  • Htay Hlaing, a teacher and former member of the NLD was arrested in 1996 for distributing copies of an NLD statement in support of national reconciliation. He was sentenced to 13 years and served more than 9 years in Insein and Taungoo prisons. He was forced to flee Burma in January 2008 after military intelligence ransacked his house and arrested two of his colleagues. He now lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Thein Aye was first arrested in 1996 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for carrying a flag of the fighting peacock during student protests (the flag has long been associated with the pro-democracy movement). He was arrested again in October 2007 in the aftermath of the Saffron Revolution when military intelligence came looking for his friend De Nyein Linn. They took Thein Aye instead and sentenced him to 2 years. He was released in 2010.

  • Kyaw Oo, student activist and member of Generation Wave, was first arrested in 1989 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for his political activities. He was arrested again in 2008 and charged with unlawful association with an outlawed organisation and was sentenced to 2 years in prison. He was released under amnesty in September 2009 and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Arkar Bo, a fellow member of Generation Wave, was arrested in March 2008 along with colleagues including Zayar Thaw and sentenced to 5 years for forming an illegal organisation. He was released under amnesty in October 2011.

  • Htay Aung was involved as student leader in the mass demonstrations in 1988. He was first arrested in 1990 and served 3 years in prison. In 1997 he was arrested again for his role in the student uprisings the previous year. Having already lost his voice due to exposure to harsh conditions in prison, he contracted tuberculosis but was denied medical treatment. He became a member of the 88 Generation Students but was forced to flee the country fearing arrest once more and currently works at the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Htay Kywe, prominent student leader during the 1988 uprising and leader of the 88 Generation Students was first arrested in 1991 during peaceful demonstrations celebrating Aung San Suu Kyi's award of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was released in 2004, 3 years after his sentence had expired. He helped found the 88 Generation Students in 2005 and in 2007 was arrested whilst in hiding after he had lead peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon. He is serving a 65 years sentence in Buthidaung prison.

  • Thwin Linn Aung, prominent leader during the student protests of 1996, was arrested in 1997 and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. He spent 5 years in Insein and Myingyan prisons before being released in 2002. He fled the country to the Thai-Burma border is currently working on the Foreign Affairs Committee for the ABFSU in exile.<br /> L Zaw Sai, a member of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) was arrested in 2005, charged with high treason and sentenced to death. He is detained in Myingyan prison.

  • Tate Naing, a student leader during the 1988 mass uprising was an executive committee member of the 'Association of Burmese Patriotic Youth'. He was arrested in March 1990 for writing and distributing a political journal and was sentenced to 3 years in prison. He was released from Thayet prison in 1993 was forced to flee Burma in 1997. He founded and is currently Secretary of the AAPP based on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Mie Mie, a leader of the 88 Generation Students, participated in the 1988 uprising as a high school student and member of the ABFSU, DPNS and worked for the NLD. She was first arrested for 3 months in 1989 but in 1996 was involved in student protests and was jailed for 7 years. In August 2007 she lead protests in Rangoon but went into hiding when her colleagues in the 88 Generation Students were arrested. She was finally caught in October 2007 and was sentenced to 65 years. She is currently detained in Katha prison.

  • Yin Htway, a former student leader during the mass uprising of 1988, was arrested for his involvement in the 10D student movement in December 1991. He was sentenced to 15 years and spent 10 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile with his wife, also a former political prisoner, on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Pyone Cho, prominent student leader during the democracy uprising of 1988 and a leader of the88 Generation Students, was first arrested in 1989 for having contact with outlawed organisations on the Thai-Burma border. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison but it was increased by 7 years when he was caught writing articles whilst in Insein prison. He was released in 2003. In August 2007 he lead peaceful protests in Rangoon but was arrested along with his colleagues. He is currently serving a 65 year & 6 month sentence in Kawthaung prison.

  • Moe Myat Thu, former member of the NLD and the Tri-Color student group was first arrested in Aung San Suu Kyi's compound in July 1989. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison but released in 1992 under amnesty. In 1995 he was arrested again due to his work for the NLD and spent 6 years in Insein and Thayet prison before being released in March 2001. He now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Kyaw San, founder member of the Tri Color student group that provided security to Aung San Suu Kyi, was detained and tortured numerous times from 1988 onwards due to his political activities. In 2007 during the Saffron Revolution he was charged with organizing protests and was sentenced to 2 years. He was released from Mong Hsat prison in May 2011 and has returned to his role as personal security for Aung San Suu Kyi.

  • Saw Mo Shey, a member of the KNU was arrested in 1994 accused of a bomb plot and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. During his incarceration his sentence was extended when he was accused of attempting a prison break. He served more than 11 years in 3 different prisons. He fled to the Thai-Burma border and is now Chairman of the Karen Youth Organisation.<br /> Saw Pho Cho, a member of the KNU, was arrested in 1998 and sentenced to 28 years imprisonment for his involvement with the KNU. He is still detained in Thayet prison.

  • Thet Oo, former central committee member of the Tri-Color student group who provided security for Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested in July 1993 due to his political activities. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Whilst incarcerated he was badly tortured and lost hearing in his left ear. Released in 2005 he joined the 88 Generation Students but was forced to flee Burma in 2007 and now works for the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Ohn Than, veteran solo protester against the military regime, was first arrested in 1988 and spent 7 years in prison for leading protests during the 1988 uprising. He was jailed again in 1996 for distributing a pamphlet "A Call for the Fight for Burma's Human Rights" and again spent 7 years in jail. In August 2007 he staged a solo protest outside the American embassy in August 2007 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently detained in Putao prison.

  • Myat Sapal Moe was involved in the student movement on 1996 organising protests against the regime. Along with colleagues they attempted to re-form the Rangoon Student Union. In 1998 she was eventually arrested for her political activities and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. She was released in 2003 having served over 4 years in Insein and Shwebo prison. She fled to the Thai-Burma border and was resettled to Norway. Nay Phone Latt is her cousin.<br /> Nay Phone Latt, a youth member of the NLD and one of Burma's best-known bloggers, was arrested in January 2008 and charged with illegal dissemination of information through the internet. During the Saffron Revolution his blog became an important source of information about developments inside Burma. He is currently serving a 12 year sentence in Hpa'an prison.

  • Aung Khaing Min, former student activist was arrested in August 1997 for his role leading the student protests in 1996. He was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment and spent more than 5 years in Insein and Taungoo prisons. He fled Burma and resettled and now works for the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Chit Ko Lin, brother of Aung Khaing Min and husband of jailed 88 Generation Student Thet Thet Aung, was arrested in October 2007 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for his involvement in leading peaceful protests during the Saffron Revolution. He spent 4 years in jail until being released under amnesty in October 2011.

  • Tin Aye, a former student leader was arrested in 1989 for his involvement in the democracy uprising in 1988 and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. After 10 years he was released but immediately re-arrested at the prison gates. He was eventually freed in 2005 after more than 15 years in Insein and Mandalay prisons. He fled the country and now lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Noble Aye, a journalist, member of the NLD and the 88 Generation Students, was first arrested in 1998 for leading student protests demanding the convening of parliament. She was sentenced to 42 years with her mother being jailed at the same time. She was released under amnesty in 2005 but in February 2008 she was arrested again and charged with criticizing the regime's proposed constitution. She is serving an 11 year sentence in Monywa prison.

  • Dr Tun Thu, a former member of the NLD, was arrested in July 1989 and falsely charged with a bombing incident in Rangoon. He was accused of high treason and sentenced to 20 years. He spent 8 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. He fled Burma and now lives on the Thai-Burma border where he works at the Mae Tao clinic.<br /> Han Sein, a member of the NLD, was arrested in August 1993 on account of his alleged possession and distribution of the "New Era" journal. Ten others were sentenced on similar charges. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and was released in September 2009.

  • Thida Htway, former student activist, was arrested in July 1999 and charged with association with the ABSDF. She was sentenced to life imprisonment and served four years in Insein and Bago prisons before being released under amnesty in 2004, She fled the country and lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Tin Tin Myint, a fellow student activist, was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. She was released under amnesty in September 2009.

  • Kyaw Thein, former student activist, was arrested in 1982 and sentenced to 2 years in prison charged with anti-government propaganda having been written in his poetry. He was jailed for just over 1 year in Moulmein prison. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Hla Myo Naung, former student leader during the 1988 uprising and leading member of the 88 Generation Students, was first arrested in 1991 and spent 5 years in prison. In 2007 he lead peaceful protests with colleagues of the 88 Generation Students but was forced into hiding when many were arrested. He was eventually caught in October 2007 and sentenced to 65 years and 6 months. He is detained in Mandalay prison.

  • Aung Khine, former student activist, was arrested in 1996 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in student demonstrations. He was jailed for 7 years in Insein and Pathein prisons. He was forced to flee and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Thandar was arrested in 2008 and charged with illegal border crossing and contact with outlawed exiled organisations. She is currently serving a 29-year sentence in Insein prison.

  • Sein Kyaw Oo, former student activist, was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in student demonstrations in Burma. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Myo Aung Naing @ Aung Naing, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was arrested in August 2007 for his role in leading peaceful protests during that lead to the Saffron Revolution. He is currently serving a 65 year and 6 month sentence in Kale prison.

  • U Teza was arrested in November 1988 for his role leading in the mass democracy uprising. He was charged with high treason and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was jailed for over 8 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Gambira, a former child soldier in the Burmese army at the age of 12, became a monk when his parents rescued him from the army. When the 88 Generation Students lead protests against the regime in August 2007 he founded the All Burma Monks Alliance and was instrumental in organising the monk lead Saffron Revolution. He was arrested in November 2007 having been in hiding and was sentenced to 68 years in prison. He is currently detained in Kale prison.

  • Soe Htike, a member of the All Burma Students Democratic Movement during the 1988 uprising was arrested in June 1991 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 2005 he joined the 88 Generation Students and participated in peaceful protests during the Saffron Revolution. He was forced to flee Burma in 2009 with his wife, also a former political prisoner, and young family when military intelligence raided their home looking to arrest them again. <br /> Than Tin, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was arrested in September 2007 for his role in peaceful protests during the Saffron Revolution. He is currently detained in Sittwe prison.

  • Win Zaw, a pro-democracy student activist, was arrested in November 1996 for writing songs for Aung San Suu Kyi. He was sentenced to 7 years and was released from Thayet prison in 2003. He fled Burma soon after his release and now works as a reporter for the Democratic Voice of Burma on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Win Maw, brother of Win Zaw, musician and democracy activist, was first jailed in 1996 for singing anti-regime songs. In 1997 he was arrested again and this time sentenced to 7 years in prison and his music was banned. In 2003 he became a reporter for DVB, composing music and passing video and photos to the exiled media organisation. In November 2007 he was arrested and charged with sending 'false information' to an illegal exiled news group. He is serving a 17 year sentence in Kyaukpyu.

  • Moe Kalayar Oo, former student activist involved in the 1988 uprising as member of the Burma Liberation Front, was arrested in February 1995 during the student lead protests at the funeral ceremony of U Nu. She was sentenced to 7 years in prison and served 6 years in Insein and Tharawaddy jails. In 2005 she joined the 88 Generation Students along with her husband Soe Htike (also a former political prisoner) and participated in the Saffron Revolution and in 2008 helped victims of Cyclone Nargis. She was forced to flee Burma in 2009 and now lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Naw Ohn Hla, leader of the Tuesday Prayer Group and member of the NLD, was arrested in 2009 for praying for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi. She was charged with crimes against the state and sentenced to 2 years. She was released form Taungoo prison in May 2011.

  • Moe Zaw Oo, an NLD Youth leader during the 1988 uprising and currently Executive Committee member of the NLD-LA, was arrested in 1990 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. He was jailed for more than 9 years in Insein and Thayet prisons. He fled Burma and now live sin exile on the Thai-Burma border where he is a CEC member of the NLD-LA.<br /> Bo Bo Oo was arrested in July 1989 for his political activities and sentenced to 19 years in prison. His sentence was extended by 7 years in 1996 in connection with the circulation of news within the prison, the preparation of a magazine, and attempts to report on human rights violations in the prison. He was transferred to Myingyan and suffered severe torture whilst there. He was released in September 2009 after 20 years in prison.

  • Lae Lae Nwe, a former student activist, was arrested in 1998 for a letter demanding the elected civilian government take power she had written with her friend Zin Mar Aung. She was sentenced to 21 years and spent 4 years in prison before being released in 2002. She now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border with her husband who is also a former political prisoner.<br /> Zin Mar Aung, a member of the NLD Youth and student activist, was arrested the day before Lae Lae. She was initially sentenced to 7 years in prison but it was extended to a total of 28 years. She was finally released under a prisoner amnesty in September 2009.

  • Kyaw Kyaw, a former army colonel and political activist, was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for chaining himself to a lamp-post in Rangoon in a solo protest against the military regime. He was jailed for 7 years in Insein prison. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Thet Nwe was arrested in 1997 for his involvement in the student protests and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is still detained in Insein prison.

  • Moe Myint has been arrested on 4 occasions spending more than 12 years in Insein prison for his wide ranging political activities and involvement in protests, from the 1975 student uprisings through to the Saffron Revolution in 2007. He was finally forced to flee Burma in 2008 and lives on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Tun Tun Win, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was arrested in December 2007 for his involvement during the Saffron Revolution. He is currently detained in Mergui prison.

  • Dr Htin Zaw, former member of the NLD, was arrested in 1999 when he returned from visiting the USA. He was sentenced to 21 years with hard labour allegedly passing information to exiled opposition groups. He was released in the amnesty of 2004. When Cyclone Nargis struck Burma he organized delivery of aid but was arrested and detained for 7 months. He fled Burma in April 2009 and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Min Thu, a leading member of the NLD Mandalay Division, was arrested in 2007 along with five other colleagues from the NLD and charged for meeting with American diplomats and for campaigning for political and human rights and the re-opening of the NLD offices across the country. He is serving a 13 year sentence in Mandalay prison.

  • Aung Kyaw Oo, former student activist was first arrested for his role in the student protests during the mass uprising in 1988. He was jailed for 4 years in Insein prison. In 2008 he was arrested near the Thai-Burma border and accused of having contact with exiled organisations. He was jailed for 1 year before being released in an amnesty in 2009. He now live sin exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Aung Thike Soe, a member of the 88 Generation Students was arrested in October 2007 and sentenced to a 9 years for his role in organizing peaceful protests during the Saffron Revolution. He was released from Mandalay prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.

  • Zaw Htun, former student leader, spent 6 years in Insein and Thayet prison due to his political activities and role organizing student protests. He fled Burma and now lives in exile with his wife, also a former political prisoner, on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Than Than Htay, a student activist and member of the ABFSU and the NLD, was arrested in 1991 and was sentenced to 6 years in prison. She was released under General Amnesty in 1992. She was arrested again in 2000 and sentenced to 17 years in prison for supporting political prisoners and unlawful association with exiled organisations. She was released from Insein prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.

  • Soe Nay Lwin, a former student activist and member of the Communist Party of Burma (CPB), was first arrested in 1976 and sentenced to 3 years for his links to the CPB. He was arrested again in 1989 after the mass democracy uprising and was sentenced to a further 10 years. He was jailed for more than 11 years in prison. He fled the country and now live sin exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Ahyoe, a student activist, was one of group of 9 young activists from Irrawaddy division that were sentenced for their roles in the Saffron Revolution in September 2007. He is serving a 10-year sentence in Kawthaung prison.

  • Ngwe Lin was arrested in 1997 for his role supporting student protests during demonstrations in December 1996. He was badly tortured during interrogation including suffering electric shock treatment. He was jailed for 7 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Gen Hso Ten of the Shan State Army North and Chairman of the Shan State Peace Council was arrested, along with seven other Shan leaders in February 2005, after he took part in a private meeting of senior political representatives to discuss the authorities' plans for political transition. He was charged with high treason and sentenced to 106 years in prison. In October 2011 he was released from Sittwe prison under the general amnesty.

  • Yi Yi Win, a former member of the NLD, was arrested in 2004 along with 3 colleagues and charged with receiving foreign satellite stations without official permission for satellite use. She was sentenced to 7 years and spent 3 years in Insein prison. She fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border whilst members of her family has been resettled to Norway.<br /> Thiha Thant Zin was arrested in September 2007 for his role in the Saffron Revolution protests. He is currently serving an 18-year sentence in Myitkyina prison.

  • San Lwin Oo was arrested in October 2007 for his participation in the Saffron Revolution protests. He was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for handing out pro-democracy leaflets. He was released from Tavoy prison in September 2009 and fled to the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Ngwe Toe was arrested during the Saffron Revolution in 2007. He is still detained in Insein prison.

  • Kyaw Kyaw Khine, a former student activist, was arrested for his involvement in the student protest in December 1996 and sentenced to 7 years in prison. He was released two years later in 1998. Along with his wife, he campaigned for workers rights but had to flee the country in 2006 when military intelligence came to arrest them. He fled the country and now lives on the Thai-Burma border with his wife who is also a former political prisoner.<br /> Jimmy @ Kyaw Min Yu, a leader of the 88 Generation Students and husband of Nilar Thein, was first arrested in 1989 for his role in the mass student lead uprising of 1988. His original 7-year sentence was increased by 12 years when he contacted the UN about prison conditions. He was finally released in 2005 but was arrested again in 2007 when leading peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon. He is currently serving a 65-year sentence in Taunggyi prison.

  • Kyi Kyi Khin, a former student activist and now journalist with the Democratic Voice of Burma was jailed for 2 years in Pathein prison for her political activities. She fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Hla Oo was arrested in April 2007 and sentenced to 8 years in prison for unlawful association with outlawed exiled organisations. He was released from Insein prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.

  • Eibar, a member of the Tri-Color student group who provided security for Aung San Suu Kyi, was first arrested in November 1990, charged with causing unrest and sentenced to 3 years with hard labour. Following his release in 1993 he was interviewed by an Australia's ABC network that in 1996 was broadcast in a television documentary. He was subsequently arrested and sentenced to 7 years. He was released in 2002 and fled to the Thai-Burma border. He has since been re-settled to Australia.<br /> Honney Oo, a final year law student, was arrested in October 2007 for her involvement in the Saffron Revolution. She was charged with re-forming the ABFSU, for having spoken with foreign media on the telephone and for participating in protests. She was sentenced to 9 years and is currently in Lashio prison.

  • Thet Khaing, a student activist, was arrested in 1998 for his involvement in student lead protests. He was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment, serving over 4 years in Insein and Mandalay before being released in 2002. He fled the country and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Bo Min Yu Ko, a student leader of the ABFSU, was arrested in September 2008 and charged with association with illegal organisations and disrespect to the nation. He was sentenced in a trial without access to legal counsel to defend him and given a 104 sentence. He is currently detained in Mandalay prison.

  • Soe Naing, a former student activist, was involved in leading protests in Mandalay during the 1988 uprising. He was twice jailed for his political activities. During the Saffron Revolution he participated in protests in Rangoon but had to flee Burma when his house was searched by military intelligence. He now works at the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Than Lwin, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, was first arrested in 1990 and sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for making subversive speeches in his constituency. In October 2007 he was arrested and sentenced to 8 years for his role involvement in protests in the Saffron Revolution. He was released from Loikaw prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.

  • Kyaw Thu Htike was arrested in 2008 during a peaceful protest in Rangoon. He was sentenced to 7 years and spent 2 years in Taunglaylone prison. He fled Burma after he was released and now live sin exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Thura Soe, a student activist, was arrested in 1999 and charged in connection with plans by opposition groups in exile to hold demonstrations in Rangoon. He is currently serving a 29 years sentence in Taungoo prison.

  • Min Min, former student activist, was arrested in June 2000 and sentenced to 14 years in prison for his political activities. He was released under amnesty in July 2005 and now works at the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Aung Than, a student and member of the NLD, was arrested near the Thai-Burma border in March 2006 and charged with associating with outlawed organisations and illegally crossing a border. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison but was released in an amnesty in May 2011.

  • Myo Min Tun, a former student activist and member of the ABSDF, was arrested in 1989 for his involvement in the democracy uprising of 1988. He was jailed for 1 year in Insein and Maubin prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Ko Thein, a member of the ABSDF, was arrested in 1998 and sentenced to death. He is still detained in Tharawaddy prison.

  • Ye Tun Oo, former student activist and member of the NLD, was arrested in 1992 and charged with being in contact with the NLD in exile on the Thai-Burma border. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison and spent more than 10 years in 3 different prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Aung Myo San, an NLD Youth member, was arrested in December 2004 along with 3 other NLD members and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently detained in Insein prison.

  • Zaw Aung, former student activist and member of the NLD, was arrested in December 1991 for his involvement in the 10D student protests when Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was sentenced to 10 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prison. He fled Burma and now live sin exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Khin Moe Aye, a prominent social and political activist and member of the 88 Generation Students, was first jailed in 1991 for her involvement in student protests celebrating Aung San Suu Kyi's Nobel Peace prize. She was sentenced to 10 years but was released under amnesty in 1992. She was arrested again in 1998 and sentenced to 7 years for assisting an author in documenting the student movement. In 2007 during the Saffron Revolution she was accused of possessing foreign currency and was jailed for 2 years in Myingyan prison before being released under amnesty in September 2009.

  • Daw Htay Htay Win was first jailed aged 15 years old during the U Thant uprising in 1974 and spent 4 years in prison. She fled to Thailand in 2005 but returned to Burma to participate in the Saffron Revolution. She again fled Burma afterwards but when Cyclone Nargis hit the country she returned to visit her father's tomb in the devastated Irrawaddy Delta region. As she made her way back to Thailand once more, she was arrested and charged with illegal border crossing and sentenced to 2 years in prison. She was released in 2009 and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Hla Hla Maw, a member of the NLD, was arrested in August 2008 for helping victims of Cyclone Nargis. She was sentenced to 9 years and is detained in Myingyan prison.

  • Moe Kyo, a student leader in the 1988 mass democracy uprising was arrested in 1991 and spent 12 years in Insein, Tharawaddy and Pathein prisons for his political activities. He now works on the Thai-Burma border where he is Chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs.<br /> Khun Htun Oo, an elected member of parliament for the SNLD in the 1990 general election and most senior political representative of the Shan ethnic group, was arrested in 2005 along with 3 colleagues whilst trying to promote a 'multi-party democracy'. He was charged with high treason, defamation and inciting dissatisfaction toward the government and was sentenced to 93 years imprisonment. He is currently detained in Putao prison.

  • U Arsara was arrested in 1989 and charged with hi treason for his involvement in the mass uprising of 1988. He was sentenced to 14 years and spent 7 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> U Kaythara, a Buddhist monk from Mandalay, was arrested in October 2007 for his involvement in the Saffron Revolution and charged with insulting the Buddhist religion. He was de-robed and sentenced to 23 years. He is currently detained in Henzada prison.

  • Thura Zaw, a former student activist, was jailed for 6 years in Mandalay prison. He was forced to flee Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Yin Yin Wine, a member of the 88 Generation Students, was arrested in June 2008 for providing assistance and aid -relief to victims of cyclone Nargis that devastated Burma in May 2008. She was sentenced to 4 years in Shwebo prison but in October 2011 she was released under the general amnesty.

  • Toe Toe Tun, a former student leader and member of the DPNS, was first arrested in 1991 for his involvement in the mass uprising of 1988. He was sentenced to 7 years and spent 4 years in Insein prison. In 1996 during student lead protests he was arrested again and sentenced to a further 7 years. He fled Burma and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.<br /> Han Win Aung, a student leader and member of the ABFSU, was first arrested in July 1994 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for his role leading the outlawed student union. In 2003 along with six colleagues he was arrested again for distributing pamphlets and the student union's statement against the regime's political roadmap. He was jailed for 7 years until his release in December 2010.

  • Yin Htwe Soe, former student leader during the mass uprisings of 1988 and member of the DPNS, was arrested in June 1989 and detained for over 2 years without trial. In 1992 he was sentenced to 7 years in prison, which was extended by 7 years when he was caught sending letters to the UNHCR about conditions inside Insein prison. He was eventually released in 2004. He fled to the Thai-Burma border and has since been resettled to Norway.<br /> Aung Thu, former student leader in 1988, was first arrested in 1990 and spent 3 years in Insein prison. In 2006 he joined the 88 Generation Students and in August 2007 participated in peaceful protests against the regime. He went into hiding when his colleagues were arrested but was caught in October 2007 and is currently serving a 65 year sentence in Putao prison.

  • Su Mon Aye, a former student activist and member of the NLD Youth, became one of the youngest female political prisoners when she was jailed in 2000 aged just 19. She was jailed in Insein prison for one year. She fled to the Thai-Burma border and is now a journalist working for the exiled media.<br /> Eaint Khaing Oo, colleague of Su Mon Aye and fellow journalist, was arrested in June 2008 in the Irrawaddy Delta region whilst she reported on the situation for survivors of Cyclone Nargis. She was arrested in front of members of the UN staff in camp providing temporary shelter and was sentenced to 2 years in prison. She was released in September 2009.

  • Wai Moe, former member of the ABFSU since the age of 11, was arrested in 1993 aged just 17 years old. He was jailed for 5 years in Insein, Mandalay and Myingyan prison - it was in Myingyan where was badly tortured and shackled and placed in solitary confinement for 3 years. He fled to Thailand and is now a journalist at exiled media organisation 'The Irrawaddy'.<br /> Saw Thet Tun, a university student, was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to 36 years in Tharawaddy prison. He was eventually released under amnesty in October 2011.

  • U Zin Linn, a journalist and former Executive Committee member of the NLD, was first arrested in 1982 as student activist. He was charged with distributing political pamphlets and spent 2 years in Insein prison. In 1991 after joining the NLD he was accused of having contact with the exiled government, the NCGUB, and was sentenced to 7 years. He fled Burma in 2000 and live sin Thailand where he is currently Director of Media & Information for the NCGUB as well as being Vice-President of the Burmese Media Association.<br /> U Saw Hlaing, lawyer and elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, has been arrested on at least 5 occasions. In 1976 he spent 2 years in prison for his role in the Thakin Kodaw Hmaing demonstrations and in 1991 he was sentenced to death for high treason. He was last arrested in 2005 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for 'possession of un-licensed computers'. In October 2011 he was released from prison under the general amnesty.

  • Kyaw Zwa Moe was arrested in December 1991 for his role in the student lead protests known as the '10D Movement' when Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace prize. HE was sentenced to 10 years in prison and spent almost 8 years in Insein and Tharawaddy jails. He fled to Thailand and is now Managing Editor at the exiled media organisation 'The Irrawaddy".<br /> Ant Bwe Kyaw, leading member of the 88 Generation Students and former cellmate of Kyaw Zwa Moe, was first arrested for his role in the 10D movement of 1991. He was released in 1999 and became a writer. He joined the 88 Generation Students in 2005 and lead peaceful protests in August 2007 that lead to the Saffron Revolution. He was arrested and sentenced to 65 years and is currently detained in Katha prison.

  • Khin Maung Soe was involved in the mass democracy uprising in 1988 and was jailed for 4 years charged with unlawful association with outlawed organisations and distributing materials that can harm the nation. He was jailed for 4 years in Insein prison. He fled Burma and now works as an editor at the Democratic Voice of Burma in Thailand.<br /> Saw Wai, a poet was arrested in January 2008 after his poem mocking regime leader Senior General Than Shwe entitled "February 14" was published in the 'Love Journal'. The first words of each line of the poem spelled out "Power Crazy Senior General Than Shwe". He was sentenced to 2 years in prison and was released in May 2010.
