U Win Htein, former Captain in the Burmese army and personal secretary to Aung San Suu Kyi, has been jailed for 20 years for his political activities in Burma. He endured severe torture throughout his time incarcerated and in 2008 he was released form Katha prison only to be re-arrested the following day. He was finally released in July 2010 and returned to his role in the NLD as a close senior advisor to Aung San Suu Kyi and recently was elected to parliament as an NLD MP
