U Nay Win, a former member of the Communist Party of Burma was arrested in 1989 charged with leading a Farmers' Union. He spent 10 years in Insein and Myingyan prisons. Whilst in prison he left the Communist Party believing it could not benefit Burma's future and upon his release he joined the NLD. He fled to the Thai-Burma border to work for the FTUB and eventually re-settled to Norway.
Win Ko, a human rights defender, was arrested in 2006 and sentenced to 17 years in prison. He is currently detained in Taungoo prison.
