Mae La refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border. Just 8kms from the border, Mae La is the largest of all of the camps and it has become well established as a central point for refugees fleeing Burma. Officially there are approximately 32,000 people living in often squalid cramped conditions in the camp, although a more realistic number is closer to 50,000. Every dry season, the area is tense with concerns relating to camp security - threats of armed attack and/or attempts to burn the camp.
