U Thawbita, a politically active monk, was arrested in March 2005 and charged with insulting the Buddhist religion. He was jailed for one year in Insein prison. He fled Burma and is now a refugee in Umpiem Mai camp on the Thai-Burma border.
U Gawthita, a Buddhist monk from Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery, was arrested in September 2007 during the Saffron Revolution when soldiers from the Burmese army raided the monastery. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison and is still detained in Taungoo prison.
