U Kyi Win, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, was first arrested in 1988 due to his involvement in the mass uprising. He was arrested in 1998 along with hundreds of NLD members and other MPs when the CRPP was being formed and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He continues to work for the NLD in Rangoon.
Khun Htun Oo, an elected member of parliament for the SNLD in the 1990 general election and most senior political representative of the Shan ethnic group, was arrested in 2005 along with 3 colleagues whilst trying to promote a 'multi-party democracy'. He was charged with high treason, defamation and inciting dissatisfaction toward the government and was sentenced to 93 years imprisonment. He is currently detained in Putao prison.
