U Vissudha, was arrested during the 1988 mass uprising for leading protests in his hometown of Sittwe. During the protest a sergeant from the Burmese army was beaten to death and U Vissudha was falsely charged and sentenced to death. He served 9 years in Tharawaddy and Sittwe prison before his release in 1997. He fled Burma and is now a refugee in Umpiem Mai camp on the Thai-Burma border.
Phyu Maung, a member of the Arakan Communist Party, was arrested in 1986 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is still detained in Tharawaddy prison.
