Since June 2010 the Friendship bridge that spans the Moei river between Burma and Thailand has been closed bringing an end to trade between the two countries that has cost the Thai government almost US$3m per day. Illegal border trade still takes place at nearby crossings but the Burmese government are using the bridge as leverage with the Thai authorities to force them to close down activist groups based in Mae Sot
