Hla Hla Htwe was arrested in 1989 when students gathered to pay their respects to General Aung San at the Martyrs Mausoleum in Rangoon. She was jailed for 3 years in Insein prison. In 1996 she was arrested again accused of causing an explosion. She eventually fled Burma and is now re-settled in Norway.
Mar Mar Oo, a leading member of the 88 Generation Students was twice jailed in 1989 and 1996 spending 13 years in prison for her role in leading student demonstrations. In 2007 along with her colleagues she lead peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon. After evading arrest for one year she was eventually caught and sentenced to 70 years in prison. She is currently detained in Bhamo prison.
