Cho Saint, a poet, journalist and grandson of Thakin Kodaw Hmaing one of the hero's of Burma's independence along with General Aung San, was arrested in 1997 for his writings supporting the student movement. He was jailed for 7 years in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons. Upon his release from prison he fled Burma and was re-settled to Norway in 2005.
Saya Soe @ Soe Myint, a veterinary doctor and former member of the Communist Party of Burma was arrested in 1992 and sentenced to death, commuted to 22 years in prison, for his political activities and for allegedly composing a song that commemorated the NLD election victory. He was released from Tharawaddy prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.
