Aung Zaw Sha, a former student activist and member of the ABFSU was arrested in December 1989 for his involvement in leading student protests in Bago during the mass uprising of 1988. His sentence of 3 years was served in 4 different prisons before he was released in 1993. He currently lives in Nupo refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border where he is awaiting resettlement to a third country.
Hla Myint Than, a member of the NLD, was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to 18 years in prison for his involvement in the issuing of statements demanding dialogue with the military regime. He is currently detained in Insein prison.
