U Kyaw San Hla, a famous poet and writer from Mandalay has been jailed on numerous occasions for his political wiritings and activities promoting democracy in Burma. He still lives in Mandalay and continues to write despite censorship and being monitored by the authorities. Mar Mar Oo, a leading member of the 88 Generation Students was twice jailed in 1989 and 1996 spending 13 years in prison for her role in leading student demonstrations. In 2007 along with her colleagues she lead peaceful protests through the streets of Rangoon. After evading arrest for one year she was eventually caught and sentenced to 70 years in prison. She is currently detained in Bhamo prison.
