Daw Khin Htay Kywe, a recently elected member of parliament for the NLD and previously also elected in the 1990 general election was arrested in 1997 when the NLD attempted to hold its first congress. She was jailed for 2 years in Moulmein prison. She continues her work today for the NLD as well as being a prominent lawyer defending democracy and human rights activists as well as being a personal lawyer for Aung San Suu Kyi.
