Soe Naing, a former student activist, was involved in leading protests in Mandalay during the 1988 uprising. He was twice jailed for his political activities. During the Saffron Revolution he participated in protests in Rangoon but had to flee Burma when his house was searched by military intelligence. He now works at the AAPP on the Thai-Burma border.
U Than Lwin, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, was first arrested in 1990 and sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for making subversive speeches in his constituency. In October 2007 he was arrested and sentenced to 8 years for his role involvement in protests in the Saffron Revolution. He was released from Loikaw prison in October 2011 under the general amnesty.
