Phaung Daw Oo is a monastic education centre in Nanshe Township in north-eastern Mandalay. Founded in 1993 by the monk U Nayaka and U Jotika, the centre has provided private free education to thousands of under-privileged children of Mandalay. There are more than 6,000 pupils including novice monks and more than 400 orphans. The centre also provides free healthcare to local residents with doctors and staff volunteering their time.
The Burmese government spends under 2% of GDP on education and healthcare combined whilst at the same time spending over 40% on the military. Burma is ranked as one of the least developed nations in the world.
