U Bo Thaung joined the National League for Democracy after the 1988 uprising and was elected Member of Parliament for Yinmabin constituency in the 1990 election. He was never able to take his seat as the military government refused to recognise the election results instead arresting members of the opposition. U Bo Thaung fled to India and joined the NCGUB, Burma's opposition government in exile. He was elected as a Central Executive Committee member of the NLD-LA in 1996 and is currently the Chairman.
