Daw San San, an elected member of parliament for the NLD in the 1990 general election, was arrested in 1992 at a secret meeting of MPs forming a parallel government. She was charged with high treason and sentenced to 25 years in prison. She was released under amnesty in 1993 but in in 1997 she was arrested again when she gave an interview to the BBC. She was charged under the Official Secrets Act and sentenced to 25 years. She was released in 2001. She fled to the Thai-Burma border in 2003 and is now vice president of the Members of Parliament Union.
U Aung Thein, a member of the NLD Central Committee was arrested in March 2006 and charged with possession of a satellite phone and contacting exiled NLD leaders outside of the country including Daw San San. He was sentenced to 20 years and is currently detained in Insein prison.
