Maung Maung Oo, a poet and writer was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to 7 years in prison for his role in student protests during the mass democracy uprising of 1988. He was jailed for 2 years before being released under amnesty in 1993. He still lives in Mandalay and continues to write despite censorship and being monitored by the authorities.
Shwe Htoo, a teacher and political activist, was first arrested in 1990 for his involvement in the mass uprising in 1988. He was arrested again in July 1998 for his alleged support for calls to convene parliament. However, he was charged with illegal possession of a gun and sentenced to 42 years in prison. He is still detained in Taunggyi prison.
