Hla Than, a former high school student activist during the 1988 uprising was arrested in 1989 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. His sentence was extended by 7 years in 1996 for his involvement in a secret report being issued to the UN about conditions inside Insein prison. He was eventually released form Thayet prison on 2004 having served over 14 years in jail. He fled Burma and currently lives in Umpiem Mai refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border where he is awaiting resettlement to a third country.
Saw Tin Oo was arrested in front of the Burmese embassy in Bangkok in October 1999 when the 'Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors' group raided the embassy, taking hostages inside. Saw Tin Oo was handed over to Burmese Intelligence services and was transferred to Burma where he was charged with high treason and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is still detained in Thayet prison.
