Yan Aung Shwe fled Burma after his involvement in the 1988 uprising. He joined the Burma Rakhine Social Welfare Association and worked in Bangkok. In 1995 he returned to Burma to carry out political movements but in 1999 he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years. He was jailed in Insein and Tharawaddy prisons for 10 years. He fled Burma once again and is now a refugee in Umpiem Mai camp on the Thai-Burma border.
Kyaw Thura, a student activist, was arrested in July 1999 for his involvement in the 9999 student movement. He was sentenced to 24 years and is still detained in Tharawaddy prison.
