Mahkaw Hkun Sa, a prominent lawyer, was arrested in 1991 accused of meeting with leaders of the Kachin Independence Organisation and its military wing the Kachin Independence army. Under interrogation he accused the military regime of unlawfully taking control of the country and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He spent 7 years in Myitkyina and Mandalay prison. He fled Burma in 2002 and now lives in the UK where he is General Secretary of the Kachin National council.
Sai Hla Aung, a leading member of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, was arrested in February 2005 along with five others and charged with high treason after convening a meeting to discuss political transformation in Burma. He is serving a 79-year sentence in Kyaukpyu prison.
