Former student leader, Htay Aung, was jailed in 1990 and again in 1997 for a total of more than 8 years for his political activities. Suffering from chronic tuberculosis whilst in prison rather than give him treatment he was just transferred to the leprosy ward of the prison hospital and left to die, surviving only due to the medicine his visiting mother woudl bring him. He now lives in exile in Thailand where he continues his work in the struggle for democracy in Burma with his fellow former political prisoners at the 'Assistance Association for Political Prisoners' in Mae Sot
