Yar Kyaw, a writer and poet from Mandalay, was first arrested in 1990 and was jailed for 1 year for his involvement in the mass democracy uprising of 1988. He was arrested again in 1998 for taking part in protests calling for national reconciliation and was jailed for a further 6 years. He still lives in Mandalay and continues to write despite censorship and being monitored by the authorities.
Kyaw Nyunt, a pro-democracy activist, was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to 22 years in prison charged with high treason. He is currently jailed in Mandalay prison.
