Zaw Zaw Aung was arrested in 1989 for his role in the student lead demonstrations where along with his colleagues, they re-formed the 'Bakatha' student movement. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Upon his release in 1999 he continued his political activities working in social welfare movements but was finally forced to flee to the Thai-Burma border in 2005. He has now re-settled to the UK where he lives in London.
Sai Nyunt Lwin, General Secretary of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, was arrested in February 2005 and charged with high treason along with other leading members of the SNLD. He was sentenced to 85 years and is currently detained in Kale prison.
