Kyi Phay Kyaw, a former student activist was arrested during the mass democracy uprising in 1988. He was sentenced to 21 years and served over 13 years in Insein and Myitkyina prisons. He fled the country and now lives in exile on the Thai-Burma border.
Pyae Phyo Hlaing, a student activist, was arrested in September 2007 for his role in the Saffron Revolution. He was accused of illegal border crossing, attending training given by subversive organisations, defaming the state, and violations of the printing act. He is serving a 24 year sentence in Sittwe prison.
