Maung Tin Thit, a poet from Mandalay, was arrested in 1998 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in student led protests demanding national reconciliation in Burma. He was jailed for more than 7 years in Mandalay and Myaungmya prisons. He still lives in Mandalay and continues to write despite censorship and being monitored by the authorities.
Zaw Htoo, a member of the NLD was serving a 20 year sentence in Myaungmya prison before being released under amnesty in October 2011.
