U Mya Sein, former secretary of the Burmese Government's Internal Peace Council was first arrested in 1965 for his role in brokering peace treaties with ethnic armed groups. He was arrested again in 1982, 1987 and 1989 for his political activities and was jailed for more than 16 years in Insein, Coco Island and Pathein prisons. Upon his release in 1994 he worked for the NLD until in 2007 he was forced to flee Burma fearing re-arrest. He now lives in exile in Thailand.
